Free & Equal Forms “Stop Two Two” in Arizona

Files Official Paperwork with Secretary of State

CHICAGO, IL- On Wednesday, Free & Equal announced they had formed “Stop Two Two” in Arizona and filed the paperwork to become an officially recognized political committee. The filing was completed early this morning with the Secretary of State’s office.

“Top Two” elections allow all candidates to run in a first round of voting regardless of political affiliation. Those receiving the top two votes then run in a general election. As the top two candidates have the potential of being from the same political party, opponents have criticized the procedure as not representing the majority of voters within a diverse district.

Free and Equal played a major role in opposing “Proposition 14,” in California in 2010 as well as top two legislation in several other states. Recently they have shifted their focus to Arizona, which has begun to take up the issue as well. Over the past few weeks numerous elected officials have discussed changing Arizona election laws with vocal proponents on both sides.

“Free and Equal has been fighting top two initiatives across the country and is proud to now be officially recognized within Arizona,” said Founder and Chair Christina Tobin. “Legislation like this undermines our open political system and places far too much power in the hands of a select few.”
